44 Blues is an OLD tune and a great one that has been covered by some of the best rock bands and best guitar players in the world including Eric Clapton, Luther Dickinson (of the North Mississippi Allstars and the Black Crows) and others including Howlin Wolf, a blues guy with a distinct style that I really like.

Forty Four Blues, also known as simply "Forty Four" has deep Louisiana roots and started out as a honky tonk, piano song rather than a blues guitar song. It was taught by one musician to another starting with Little Brother Montgomery who taught it to another blues pianist called Lee Green who then taught it to yet another piano player, Roosevelt Sykes who recorded it with lyrics in 1929 titled "44 Blues".

My favorite version, in Chicago blues style by Howlin' Wolf, was recorded in 1954 featuring blues great Hubert Sumlin and Jody Williams playing the electric guitar parts, Otis Span on the keys, Willie Dixon on bass guitar and Earl Phillips playing drums. It goes without saying that some of the greatest blues guys ever playing on this version of Forty Four Blues.
